Staffordshire Bull Terrier InformationStaffordshire Bull Terrier dog breed takes its origin in the UK. This ancient English dog breed appeared more 200 years ago. It was bred at the Staffordshire county by crossing of Bulldog with various terrier dog breeds. Originally Staffordshire Bull Terrier was used for bull hounding, then as a fighting dog. Dog fights were very popular at the beginning of XIX century. Agile Staffordshire Bull Terriers have won a great popularity and hearts of many dog owners. Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog breed was recognized in 1935 and since then the Staffordshire Bull Terrier dog breed club was founded and the breed standard specified.

At the end of XIX - beginning of XX century many Staffordshire Bull Terrier were brought to the US and English colonies. Within some time there appeared differences of English Staffordshire Bull Terrier and American Staffordshire Terrier.

Since 1972 American Staffordshire Terrier was recognized as a separate dog breed and in 1974 there appeared name of Staffordshire Bull Terrier in England, and recorded with its standards to the English Kennel Club.

American Staffordshire Terrier InformationAlthough the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the American Staffordshire Terrier development is the story of a truly American dog breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed the country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship.

Staffordshire Bull Terries is less popular than its derivative Amstaff.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a short-haired, muscular and very strong dog with active and agile temperament. Staffordshire Bull Terrier differs from Amstaff by sizes:

American Staffordshire Terrier: 43-48.5 cm height, 18-25 kg weight;

Staffordshire Bull Terrier: 35.5-40.5 cm height, 12-18 kg weight.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier TemperamentIn spite of its fighting origin, Staffordshire Bull Terrier is friendly and well-socialized dog. Staffies are intelligent, brave and a rare sense of humor. They are pugnacious, but balanced, obedient, kind with children and extremely devoted to their owner. They may even ready to die for the owner. Staffordshire Bull Terrier is often called by the English people by tender Staffie. Staffies have charming smile. Staffordshire Bull Terrier is active and curious dog, with struggle for something new and discovering of the outer space. Staffie is always ready and happy for communication. Staffordshire Bull Terrier will enjoy long walking or feeling cozy around you while you are busy.

In spite of its aggressive appearance and origin, Staffie is friendly to other animals and people. Do not keep the hope that Staffie will be a good guard dog. He is too kind to be a guard. He loves children. Staffordshire Bull Terrier is obedient. It may feel frustrated only because of lack of attention of his dear owner. But if it need self-defense, Staffie will successfully defeat another dog. But he has no aggression to do harm.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier BehaviorIn general Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a physically strong and mentally stable dog. It does not need special care. Staffies are long-lived dogs. It is great companion dog. Staffordshire Bull Terrier wonderfully converted from a fighting dog to a perfect family companion. Staffie is very tolerant and patient to children. He is very devoted to his family. The only advice is not to take a Staffy to the family with a small baby. Both little creatures are too active together, and not everyone can handle this company.
